CSS stylesheets are one option, sometimes mobile plugins can help, and also creating a subdomain for a entirely different version of your website for mobile users. you can redirect your website to it based on viewing resolution.

yours– but the theme slows (!) the site down quite a bit.

Check with your hosting provider as they offer security services. Also there are several good plugins to help as well.
